CBN – Cannabinol

CBN or Cannabinol’s most pronounced, characterizing attribute is its sedative effect, and according to many testing labs, 5mg of CBN is as effective as 10mg dose of diazepam, a mild pharmaceutical sedative. For those of you who rely on cannabis to resolve a night of tossing and turning, a little CBN would do you some good. Indica strains have long been connected to these sedating, sleepy effects in “most” people, and some researchers theorize that their tendency for higher CBN contents has something to do with that. Our clients who use CBD in HIGH doses for sleep can benefit by a lower dose of CBN for sleep. ALSO, as we tell our clients in store, don’t forget the natural benefits of Cucumber and Cherry Juice before bed to help your brain secrete melatonin naturally!

What is CBN (Cannabinol)?

CBN is a cannabinoid found in many plants especially known to Cannabis and Hemp. CBN can come from activated tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) when it breaks down after prolonged periods of time. This degradation can be accelerated by exposing the dried plant biomass to oxygen and heat or under flame known as decarboxylation.

Why Haven’t I Heard of CBN?

The CBN molecule is something of a “sleeper” and not well known to many people due to it being much less popular than CBD. The people that identify with CBN are cannabis users who like to buy aged cannabis for its more sedating effects. CBN becomes more prevalent in aged cannabis as it ages. CBN has a distinct sedative quality which sets it apart from other cannabinoids, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have much to learn from the CBN cannabinoid, or much to gain from becoming more familiar with its chemical makeup and effects. Some past studies showed CBN enhances the sedating effects of THC in rats and mice. Sedation is commonly associated with CBN, because aged flowers have much more CBN than fresh flowers. The sedation factor is one of several primary differences when comparing CBN to CBD.

Is CBN Legal?

At this time, CBN is not on the list of scheduled I controlled substances in the United States and due to more states passing recreational Cannabis laws it looks unlikely that it will in the future.

How Does CBN Work?

Cannabinoids in general offer many chemical modulatory effects due to their influence to various receptors in the human biology. All mammals have specific receptors that are augmented by Cannabinoids. These special phyto-nutrients offer multiple mechanisms of action, or pathways through which they produce adjustments to chemical pathways. CBD and THC produce beneficial effects, in part, because they can activate multiple biological pathways at once. They may also produce a wider variety of effects through channels separate from the CB1 and CB2 receptors known as vanilloid receptors. The CBN cannabinoid hasn’t been researched nearly as aggressively as CBD, THC, or even some terpenes. But as researchers begin to mine cannabis for every possible benefit, the demand for more information will likely reveal the full profile of CBN’s effects.

CBN and The Endocannabinoid System

The human body’s built-in endocannabinoid system (eCS) works to keep the body in its balanced state of homeostasis. While there are specific details about how cannabinoids work, in general the endocannabinoid system performs different functions specific to each area of the body. For example, at an injury site, the eCS can help regulate immune cells to limit inflammation.

Benefits of CBN Isolate and CBN Oil

THC and CBD have both become highly valued for their therapeutic versatility in recent years. While CBN is currently far less well known than CBD or THC, it is quickly gaining the attention of the medical community due to an impressive list of potential medical uses.

Its name may bear striking resemblance to CBD, but cannabinol, ( pronounced Can-ab-inol ) known as CBN, offers a unique profile of effects and benefits that have researchers clamoring for more scientific investigation. So far, CBN’s studied benefits include:

CBN For Rest

CBN is valued as a sleep aid for some. According to an analysis from Steep Hill Labs, 5 mg of CBN is as effective as 10 mg of diazepam, a prominent pharmaceutical sedative.

CBN For Discomfort

As previously mentioned above, CBN has different mechanisms of action than CBD and it is considered a weak CB1 partial agonist, which means it binds directly to the receptor but induces much lower effects compared to a full agonist. Fact is that CBN has been shown to produce 90% less activity of THC. Rather than alleviate pain by way of TRPV-1 and the CB1 / CB2 receptors, CBN releases peptides from sensory nerves, activating an alternative nerve mechanism to achieve the same results in the brain.
