What is Rieshi Mushroom? – aka. Ling Zhi Mushroom

The Ling Zhi Mushroom is a polypore fungus (“bracket fungus”) belonging to the genus Ganoderma. In many countries, it is called the Reishi Mushroom.  Its red-varnished, kidney-shaped cap and peripherally inserted stem gives it a distinct fan-like appearance. When fresh, the Reishi is soft, cork-like, and flat. It lacks gills on its underside, and instead releases its spores via fine pores. Depending on the age, the pores on its underside may be white or brown.

Reishi mushroom is used in traditional Chinese medicine.  In nature, it grows at the base and stumps of deciduous trees, especially that of the maple. Only two or three out of 10,000 such aged trees will have Reishi growth, and therefore its wild form is rare. Reishi may be cultivated on hardwood logs, sawdust or woodchips.

Reishi is The Ancient “Mushroom of Immortality”, Revered for Over 2,000 years.

The Amazing Adaptogenic Benefits of Reishi Powder

The REISHI Mushroom is a natural fungus mushroom that has adaptogenic properties.  This means that it targets inflammation in the human cells.  Adaptogenic molecules like Cannabinoids, peppers and mushrooms tend to go to the area of most inflammation first.  They are smart molecules.

The History of The Reishi Mushroom

The REISHI Mushroom has been used in healing for thousands of years.  Reishi contains several molecules, including triterpenoids, polysaccharides and peptidoglycans, that may be responsible for its health effects.

While the mushrooms themselves can be eaten fresh, it is also common to use powdered forms of the mushroom or extracts that contain these specific molecules.  These different forms have been tested in both animal and human studies.

Benefits of The Reishi Mushroom*

Immune Benefits

One of the most important benefits of the Reishi mushroom is that it can boost your immune system.  Test-tube studies have shown that Reishi can affect
the genes in white blood cells, which are critical parts of your immune system.

Studies have found that some forms of Reishi may alter inflammation pathways in white blood cells.  Some molecules found in the mushroom can increase the activity of a type of white blood cell called killer cells.

These killer cells form antibodies to attack toxins

Cancer Benefits

A study of over 4,000 breast cancer survivors found that around 59% consumed Reishi mushroom powder.  Several test-tube studies have shown that it can
lead to the death of cancer cells.

Research has investigated Reishi could be beneficial for prostate cancer due to its effects on the Testosterone hormone.

Some research showed that one year of treatment with Reishi decreased the number and size of tumors in the large intestine.

Anti-Anxiety Benefits

A study examined its effects in 132 people with chronic anxiety, a condition associated with aches, pains, dizziness, headaches and irritability.  The researchers found that fatigue was reduced, and well-being was improved after 8 weeks of taking the supplement.

Another study found that fatigue was reduced, and quality of life was improved after 4 weeks of taking Reishi powder in a group of 48 breast cancer survivors.

Other Health Benefits

One study showed that Reishi mushroom may increase “good” HDL cholesterol and decrease triglycerides in some people.

Antioxidants are molecules that can help prevent damage to your cells.  Because of this important function, there is substantial interest in foods and supplements that can enhance antioxidant benefits in the body.
